im into many things inculding knitting, sewing, and the Procrastination Station!
old guard vs. fast fashion
Aug. 19th, 2020 12:30 amI saw an art post on tumblr tonight about how Andy, Joe, Nicky, and Booker, all have older, worn, clothes. While Nile's are almost always new. And then i was rereading a fic and it involved Copley telling Booker: "I washed what was in your bag, although we really should get you some new clothes. Lot of knife and bullet holes in some of those."
and the first thing i thought was "you could just mend them." the second was "naw they wouldn't know how to do that." The third was "Booker was a solider in 1800's france. Of course he knows how to mend his clothes!" All five of the older immortals would. Now this doesn't mean that Nile doesn't know how. she might! mending still might be a big part of Black american culture! i dont know! That's something i need to go look into! But I can't guaranty that she can, On the other hand I can almost guaranty that the other five can.
Because this whole (most notably in the middle, and upper class. Because they have that disposable income) behavior of "Oh I've worn this 10 times, time to replace it." Or "This has a small tear/hole in it. time to throw it out!". This behavior is born out of fast fashion and capitalism convincing us (general society) that we need New Things All The Time. And yes that behavior has always been around. But not to the current extreme and not with clothes. Because until 1790 everything was done by hand. And even then the sewing machine took a long time to catch on and even longer to become a household item.
Gathering the fiber. Spinning the fibers, Weaving the fiber's into fabric. And finally sewing that fabric into a garment. clothing was expensive. And we wore it to death. thing's were patched and pieced relentlessly. every scrape cost and every scrape mattered.
And yes it was mostly seen as woman's work! but. that leads us to. They were all soldiers, husifs (or housewife) is a small sewing kit that rolls up and fits in a pocket. They have been around for at least a couple hundred years in armies. Repairing clothes was the norm. And being travelers and soldiers. Especially if you're alone, in pairs, or a small group. they'd need to mend.
I can also see, that if it's not already a skill set she has and uses, Nile picking it up too.

Also look me in the eye and tell me Joe and Nicky would have asked Andy and Quynh to mend their clothes. Look me in the eye and tell me Booker tried to pass his mending off to Andy (or anyone else lol) more than once.
TL;DR the majority, if not all of the old guard mend the fuck out of their clothes and generally wear them to death.
